Purpose:
Alpha House is a community-based facility providing services for those under the influence of, or withdrawing from alcohol or other drugs and require assistance on stabilizing their condition.

Fast Facts about Alpha House

  • Alpha House is incorporated as Calgary Alpha House Society under the Alberta Societies Act and is a non profit social service agency with charitable status.
  • Our mission is to provide a safe and caring environment for individuals whose lives are affected by alcohol and other drug dependencies.
  • Alpha House programming includes Detox, Shelter, Outreach, Housing and Volunteer
  • Alpha House provides services to both men and women, 18 years and older (no limit) with alcohol abuse and drug addiction
  • The original facility opened in 1981 as a social Shelter and Detox an innovation from the predominant medical approach of the day
  • In Nov 2003, the Calgary Alpha House Society set forth a path of reconstruction and revitalization of its facility with the goal of maximizing space and increasing user capacity.
  • The original land or footprint was essentially two separate sites, with a total of 3 street frontages (15 Ave SE, Macleod Trail, and 17 Ave SE).The site with a frontage on 17 Ave was originally the staff parking lot.
  • Gross area – 30,454 square feet (2,830 square meters) an addition of 20.000 square feet
  • In 2005 our DOAP Team begins our outreach program. In 2011 our outreach team runs 24/7 and transports 1000 clients a month from streets to shelter and hospitals as needed.
  • In 2009 our Alpha House Housing program began and with our Encampment Team has housed over 200 chronically difficult to house clients.
  • Nightly we shelter over 120 men and women. Our winter response increases this number to over 150 per night during the coldest months of the year.

1,725 clients came to Alpha House for detox last year, 85% completed treatment

900 clients transported monthly by Alpha DOAP Team, saving tax payers a ratio of $5.36 for every $1.00 spent

200 men and women who were homeless and alcohol and/or drug addicted were housed since 2009

150 more men and women struggling with homeless and alcohol/drug addiction will be provided with stable affordable housing in 2012
